Anyone can learn a new language. Those who have a JMRL library card can access free online language lessons through Transparent Language (formerly BYKI -Before You Know It). Click on Language in the left menu on the JMRL – Databases page, click on Transparent Language Online, and enter your last name and JMRL card number. If you have a tablet or smart phone, you can practice your new language(s) there also.

Being fluent in two languages may help to keep the brain sharper for longer, a study suggests.
Researchers from York University in Canada carried out tests on 104 people between the ages of 30 and 88. They found that those who were fluent in two languages rather than just one were sharper mentally.
