Probably everyone knows the uncomfortable feeling of being “out of place” from time to time, but just the fortunate live in a city where they feel truly “in place” most of the time.

Places said to have a strong “sense of place” have a strong identity and character that is deeply felt by local inhabitants and by many visitors. Sense of place is a social phenomenon that exists independently of any one individual’s perceptions or experiences, yet is dependent on human engagement for its existence.

Spirit of PLACE
Spirit of place or soul refers to the unique, distinctive and cherished aspects of a place; often those celebrated by artists and writers, but also those cherished in folk tales, festivals and celebrations. It is thus as much in the invisible weave of culture stories, art, memories, beliefs, histories, etc. as it is the tangible physical aspects of a place monuments, boundaries, rivers, woods, architectural style, rural crafts styles, pathways, views, and so on or its interpersonal aspects the presence of relatives, friends and kindred spirits, and the like.

OK, so what is Placemaking?
Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. Placemaking capitalizes on a local community’s assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people’s health, happiness, and well being. It is political due to the nature of place identity. Placemaking is both a process and a philosophy.
