The McGuffey Arts Classes are one of the artistic and creative classes offered to the inmate population here at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, and are facilitated by Artists Ms. Rose Hill, Ms. LeVonne Yountz, Ms. Lindsay Freedman, Ms. Esther Lopez, and Mr. George Andrews . The objective of this class is to provide the inmates with a means of learning and developing new and creative ways of expressing themselves.
Programs such as this art class additionally provide inmates with the opportunity to gain self-confidence in themselves and their abilities, which in turn increases their self-worth. Once an inmate has gained these levels of self-confidence and self-worth, they then have the opportunity to begin to address their cognitive thinking process as well as modifying their behaviors in respect to themselves and others.
